Koa is the stuff of legend, an ancient Hawaiian wood that has held sacred meaning for centuries. It reveals its full visual story with golden-amber tones that seem to capture island sunlight, intricate grain patterns, and subtle color variations that make each piece unmistakably itself. This is wood that traveled thousands of miles to become headphones, and its journey is written in every growth ring.
Premium Koa grows slowly in Hawaiian volcanic soil, developing the tight, even grain structure and natural luster that create a warm, lustrous aesthetic at once ancient and contemporary. Each piece arrives with its own character—variations in grain, mineral content, and color that tell the story of that specific tree's centuries in the Pacific. Koa was once used for Hawaiian outrigger canoes and sacred objects. Today it remains one of the world's most prized and increasingly rare hardwoods.
The Caldera Closed is ZMF's flagship closed-back planar magnetic headphone, hand-assembled in small batches and finished to highlight the natural character of each piece of Koa.
